About DECA

Are you interested in business, marketing, finance, or entrepreneurship? Do you want to challenge yourself, develop leadership skills, and connect with like-minded students? Then DECA might be a perfect fit for you.

DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. It is organized into two unique student divisions each with programs designed to address the learning styles, interests, and focus of its members. The High School Division includes over 292,000 members in over 4,000 schools. The Collegiate Division includes over 5,400 members in 200+ colleges and universities.

DECA Competitive Events

DECA competitive events are designed to simulate real business situations. Students are evaluated by industry professionals and judges on their problem-solving, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Events fall into following categories:

  1. Role-Play Events

Role-play events are one of the most popular DECA competitions. In these events, students are given a real-world business scenario and a short preparation time (10 minutes for individuals, 30 minutes for teams). Then, they present their solution to a judge in a role-play setting.

Events include marketing management, business law and ethics, entrepreneurship, finance, and hospitality and tourism. These events help students practice quick thinking, professionalism, and persuasive communication.

  1. Written Events

Written events involve developing a detailed business plan or project over several months. Students submit a written report and later present their project to a judge.

Events include start-up business plan, integrated marketing campaign, operations research, and community awareness project. Written events are ideal for students who enjoy research, creativity, and long-term planning.

  1. Online Events/Exams

Some DECA events - stock market game and virtual business challenge - include online exams that test business knowledge in areas such as accounting, entrepreneurship, hotel management, and personal finance. These events emphasize analytical thinking and foundational business concepts.

DECA Competition Pathway

DECA competitions progress through multiple levels, allowing students to advance and compete with top performers from around the region, province/state, and world.

Regionals

Regionals is the first level of DECA competition. Students compete against others from nearby schools in their chosen events. It helps students gain experience, learn how DECA competitions work, and receive feedback from judges within a week. Many students qualify for the next level at Regionals, depending on placement and event size.

Provincials (or State Conferences)

Students who qualify at Regionals head to Provincials (often called State Conferences in the states). This level is more competitive and brings top students together across the province or state.

Provincials offer higher level competition, leadership academies and workshops, and networking opportunities with students and professionals. It also loads with award ceremonies and sponsor showcases. Top performers at Provincials earn the opportunity to advance to the international level.

ICDC (International Career Development Conference)

The International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the highest level of DECA competition. Held annually in south of the USA, ICDC brings thousands of students from around the world together.

At ICDC, students compete at the international level, attend leadership sessions and keynote speeches, network with students, judges, and business professionals, and experience college and career expos. Qualifying for ICDC is a major achievement and highlights dedication, skill, and excellence in business education.

Beyond Competition: Leadership and Chapter Activities

DECA isn't just about competing. Members can also:

  • Run for chapter, provincial/state, or international leadership positions

  • Participate in community service and outreach projects

  • Attend leadership conferences and training sessions

  • Collaborate on school-wide initiatives and events

These opportunities help students grow as leaders and make an impact beyond the classroom.

My Own Experience

Participating in DECA was a challenging but rewarding experience for me. I competed in Marketing Management (MTDM) event with my friend, and although we did not qualify for Provincials, the process itself was incredibly valuable. Preparing for DECA required studying business concepts for exam and practicing role-plays.

What made the experience especially meaningful was working closely with my partner. We practiced daily after school in the library, giving each other feedback, improving our answers, and learning how to communicate more clearly and confidently. Through this collaboration, I developed stronger teamwork skills, time management, and a better understanding of real-world marketing scenarios.

Even without advancing to the next level, DECA made my experience of the preparation, effort, and lessons worth immensely. It also encouraged me to challenge myself in public speaking and gain confidence.

Why DECA Matters

DECA equips students with practical skills that are valuable in any career: communication, teamwork, leadership, and confidence. Through competition, conferences, and collaboration, DECA helps students turn ideas into action and prepare for future success.
